B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 - September 27, 2007 - (Page 26) N B A A 2 0 07 East or West, Berlin Is Best Russia and its neighboring states undoubtedly present an aerospace marketing opportunity, but how can anyone do business in the chaotic and oppressive environment of the Moscow Air Show? “No need,” says Rolf Dorpinghaus, “Come to Berlin, which has a long history of being the meeting point between East and West.” Dorpinghaus, the Berlin air show’s senior aerospace advisor, and Birgit Compans, its project director, are in Atlanta this week to persuade those planning to do aerospace business anywhere in Europe that Berlin is the center of the action. “Anyone also needing to address European Union political issues, like the environment, needs to be in one of its major countries, not in a neutral state,” said Dorpinghaus in a thinly-veiled reference to EBACE in Switzerland, to be held a few days before. (Show News is the official show daily at ILA). At this stage in the planning process, space reservations are already running ahead of 2006— itself a record year. More space is being made for GA exhibits as a fortunate consequence of major renovation work at the Schoenefeld Airport site, which has provided a new GA parking area directly in front of the chalets. The first three days are strictly trade, but Compans warns GA executives against leaving too early in the show: Friday, May 30 brings a large number of private aircraft owners whose business is not to be spurned. The Berlin Show is keen to see GA symposia organized at the onsite conference center—again on a U.S.-meets-EU or East-meetsWest basis. “The Russians are used to coming to Berlin,” said Dorpinghaus without a trace of irony. —Paul Jackson
