Phirst Phlight for 2nd Phenom Yesterday, exactly two calendar months after its predecessor, the second Embraer Phenom 100 prototype took to the air at São José dos Campos, Brazil. Crew for the sortie comprised Marcio Brisolla Jordão, Antoini Bragança Silva and flight engineer Carlos Roberto Silveira Filho. Number two is assigned to systems—in-flight thrust determination—and flutter trials. The prototype flew on June 26 and has now completed 55 flight hours in 39 flights. The Phenom 100 test campaign will include a fleet of four jets, for an accumulation of about 1,800 flight hours, 600 of which are for the maturity campaign. Following the first two instrumented machines, the next two for trials will have interiors designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA. Number three is now under construction, the whole certification program being due for wrap-up by mid-2008. “The flight test campaign is steadily progressing, confirming the quality and trueness of the project design of these jets,” said Henrique Langenegger, vp programs, executive jets at Embraer. Meanwhile, the larger Phenom 300’s subassembly process has begun in Botucatu plant, Brazil, where the rear fuselage is currently being built. The program reached the landmark of more than 2,000 parts produced, and around 6,300 drawings have already being released by engineering to manufacturing planning. In addition, the jet engine ran for the first time, on a test cell, at Pratt & Whitney Canada. —Paul Jackson Land in the Land of the Rising Business Jet What’s the best business airport in Japan? Nagoya, of course. How do we know? First, its representatives are on Booth 843 and they told us so. Second—incredibly—it’s the only airport in Japan at which arriving business travelers don’t have to stand in line with the hoi polloi disgorged by airliners in order to pass through customs and immigration. Nagoya is Japan’s third city and is equal distance from Tokyo and Osaka (numbers one and two), both of which are less than a two-hour ride on the famous Bullet train. Business jets park on one of six reserved spots directly in front of the terminal and within 70 paces, passengers are inside the single room dedicated to essential formalities. Open from 7am to 10pm, the airport charges a typical (Challenger 600-series) $300 landing fee and $18 parking per day.
