B/CA Show News - NBAA 2007 - September 27, 2007 - (Page 35) N B A A 2 0 07 ARINC Expands Radar Service ARINC says its new expanded weather radar service for business jets will provide coverage for the first time in major regions of the world where no radar data has been previously available. In addition, ARINC Direct is adding wireless mobile flight planning to its business jet services. The weather radar data that will be provided to customers in the ARINC Expanded Weather Radar service has never been readily available before to any business jet operators, says ARINC Direct Senior Director Bob Richard. The service is offered to ARINC Direct customers operating business jets equipped with Honeywell Primus Epic avionics. Coverage of Australia, Europe and North America will be provided initially. East Asian coverage will be added by the end of the year. Another improvement is the addition of accurate overlays of the true local radar coverage, allowing pilots to identify parts of a flight path where severe weather may occur without being detected by ground based radar. The new service is available at no extra charge to customers who subscribe to A R I N C ’s g r a p h i c a l w e a t h e r imagery. The new ARINC Direct Mobile service is designed for pilots and flight departments who want to create and submit flight plans using Blackberries and other wireless devices. Many customers have been asking for this type of service to make last-minute changes or check on the status of a flight plan when they cannot get to a computer. The service offers most of the features of ARINC’s standard web-enabled flight planning services. The new ARINC Direct Mobile service is designed for pilots and flight departments who want to create and submit flight plans using Blackberries and other wireless devices. The Featherweight Business Jet Champion Of The World A Cessna Mustang set the first speed record for the very light jet (VLJ) under 10,000 pounds on the way to the NBAA convention as it commemorated the association’s founding 60 years ago. The National Aeronautic Assn. is expected to certify the Sept. 22 flight from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y., to DeKalbPeachtree Airport in Atlanta for “speed over a recognized course” in the “under-10,000-pound VLJ” category. Bob Stangarone, the Cessna vp for corporate communications, co-piloted the aircraft. He says the Mustang clocked 318.87 mph during a 2 hour, 23 minute and 44 second flight. The aircraft burned 1,510 pounds of fuel. The commemorative flight originated from the site of the first NBAA meeting in 1947 with NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen aboard along with Pat Epps, president of Epps Aviation at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Jamail Larkins, a 23-year-old special assistant to the president of NBAA who obtained his pilot’s license at age 14, was also on the record-breaking flight. He works to inspire young people about pursuing careers in aviation. The aircraft was piloted by Cessna’s Jim Perry. The flight also occurred on the 100-year anniversary of powered flight in the state of Ga. Pat Epps’ father, Ben T. Epps Sr., built and piloted the first powered aircraft in the state in 1907. This is also Cessna’s 80th anniversary. —David Hughes NBAA Honors Vets’ Airlift Command This week, NBAA presented its Al Ueltschi Award for Humanitarian Leadership to the Veterans Airlift Command (VAC) for its work in providing free air transportation to wounded warriors, veterans and their families for medical and other compassionate purposes through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots. Many of the airplane owners who volunteer with VAC are also pilots who welcome the opportunity to perform a valuable service while maintaining their proficiency. Some owners come from military backgrounds themselves; others are seasoned aviators or simply passionate about flying. Volunteers are always welcome to offer whatever they are able. Later this year, the VAC will be flying servicepersons’ families to Disneyland as part of the Snowball Express, which is also supported by airlines, companies and —Paul Jackson Rotary organizations.
