A New Era
lighting specifiers sound genuinely excited about the newest trends in exterior fixtures — from the movement away from clients asking for LEDs no matter how appropriate to the application (see “LEDs: Making Intelligent Choices” on next page), to the ability to incorporate controls, to the use of more interesting and sustainable materials. Manufacturers are playing a big role, along with the combined efforts of the International Dark Sky Association and the Illuminating Engineering Society, whose Model Lighting Ordinance is paving the way for more intelligent fixture specification and application. On the aesthetic side, we are seeing a trend toward more modern, contemporary fixtures and the development of urban lighting furniture — pole fixtures that incorporate controls, signage, and even bike racks, and benches that are also light fixtures. The goal is a more appealing pedestrian landscape and the return of the night sky. —Allison Craig
