The Out-Of-Building Experience
one could argue that experiencing a building from the outside is as important as experiencing it from within. Most people will not have a reason to visit a new high-end residential tower, but they will notice how safe, or unsafe, the building’s lighting and landscaping makes them feel when they walk past it alone at night. This spring, I finally had the chance to visit the 47-acre site of Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. His iconic house is one of a collection of historic buildings on the property that he carefully designed to be experienced from both inside and out. While walking from building to building, I appreciated how Johnson carved his vision out of the landscape like a woodworker transforms oak into a fine piece of furniture: a sweeping curve here, a small detail there. In our “Summer” issue, we focus on those products that are experienced from the outside, including facades, landscape furnishings, outdoor lighting, entrances, and even roofing. As usual, we take a microview of each subject, with interviews, new products, and data, but do it in snap’s quick and easy-to-read format. If you are on the road this summer, you can always read our digital edition anywhere you go — just click the SNAP box at sweets.com. Finally, I would like to welcome snap’s new editorial director, and Architectural Record editor in chief, Cathleen McGuigan. Cathleen, who brings more than three decades of cultural journalism experience to our group, will also serve as editorial director for snap’s sister publication GreenSource.
