their low energy consumption and long life
have made LEDs a popular choice in outdoor lighting
applications, but this relatively young, ever-evolving
technology still faces challenges. A directional
source, LEDs excel at illuminating walls, architectural
elements, and landscape but not at general area
lighting. According to Nancy Clanton, president
of Clanton & Associates in Boulder, Colorado,
manufacturers with a track record in outdoor lighting
seem better informed and equipped to address
issues like performance and glare.
Produced by coating a blue LED with phosphor,
white LED light has a high blue component, which
some companies claim is more energy-efcient,
but studies suggest it disrupts circadian rhythms.
To combat this, many cities are moving toward
a neutral white (4000K) that mimics the color
temperature of the moon. And because LEDs'
longevity depends on proper heat dissipation,
retroftting a standard luminaire with LEDs can
adversely impact not only light distribution but also
lamp life. Luminaires specifcally designed for LEDs
will produce better results. -Alice Liao
