At the cutting edge of America’s space programme, the Kennedy Space Center, 45 minutes east of Orlando, continues to both enthrall and educate visitors.Would-be space cadets can see their heroes in the astronauts’ Hall of Fame, catch an IMAX® space film or experience the thrilling new simulator Shuttle Launch Experience. When space travel was just a twinkle in America’s ambitious eye, flying machines were very much the future. A trip around northwest Florida to the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola exhibits an absorbing collection of restored aircraft. If star-gazing is more your thing then the Bishop Planetarium in Bradenton, south of Tampa, is perfect for budding astronomers. Here, regular shows lift the lid on the universe. Alongside Florida’s futuristic exploits, there is some wonderful natural splendour. Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven is a celebration of the region’s flora and fauna.
