Official VISIT FLORIDA Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 17) A shell time in Sanibel A s away-from-it-all retreats go, Sanibel Island, off the Gulf coast near Fort Myers, is among Florida’s finest. This eco-friendly Beaches barrier island has escaped mass development and become a wildlife haven which stretches about 20 kilometres long and eight kilometres wide and is fringed by powder-sand beaches. Sanibel’s southern coast acts as a giant scoop for seashells and has made the island a paradise for shell collectors. The fondness for shells is obvious: streets are named after them, souvenirs are made out of them and the island’s biggest cultural attraction is a museum devoted to them. Beaches The Gulf coast beaches offer a perfect vantage point for Florida’s famous orange sunsets. Eagle-eyed visitors to Venice Beach can trawl the sands for prehistoric shark teeth – just be glad they’ve parted company with their owners. The fine alabaster white sands of St. Petersburg/Clearwater make this area one of Florida’s most popular sunshine retreats. Active beach bunnies can partake in an impromptu volleyball game or aim high and book a parasail ride for a bird’s-eye view of the coast. Caption goes here 17 Sanibel Island
