Official VISIT FLORIDA Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 37) The sky’s the limit when it comes to fun in Polk County. Fantasy of Flight, just west of Orlando, and The Florida Air Museum at Sun ’n Fun in Lakeland take your imagination up, up and away. Fantasy of Flight features vintage aircraft, exhibits and simulators, along with hot-air balloon rides and bi-plane rides. The Florida Air Museum offers aircraft displays, classes and lectures. Add together 554 lakes plus one long river and the sum totals countless opportunities for fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, birdwatching, wildlife cruising, airboating and more. The Kissimmee River, headwaters of the Everglades, and Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes are home to alligators and rare birds. Cypress Gardens propelled waterskiing into the spotlight as far back as the 1930s, so Polk City’s Water Ski Hall of Fame and Museum justifiably takes the credit for raising the sport’s popularity. Learn about the history of waterskiing and meet its fascinating pioneers at this new lakeside attraction. 6 5 Fairytales do come true at Chalet Suzanne, dating back to approximately 1931, an enchanting inn and restaurant where you can enjoy the same gourmet soup prepared for astronauts, take a tour around the cannery and charming shops and stay in a delightfully decorated room. Historic Lakeland town centre borders lovely Lake Morton, home to scores of graceful swans, with a handsome paved walkway, parks, gardens, antiques shops, boutiques, galleries, a hotel built around 1924, restaurants and vintage homes. At the Explorations V Children’s Museum, also in the town centre, children can learn to appreciate the art and science all around them. 8 Central 7 9 Admire the 1940s architecture of celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright on the campus of Lakeland’s Florida Southern College – it’s the largest collection of his work contained on one site. Drop in to the visitor centre for a guided walking tour. Don’t miss the inspiring centrepiece: the fantastic, avant-garde Annie Pfeiffer Chapel.
