Official VISIT FLORIDA Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 72) Sunset Pier, Key West Rule 3: Savour history and culture The Keys offer everything from historic buildings and museums to art galleries, unique shops and restaurants where seafood goes directly from ocean to plate. Key West, one of Florida’s first towns, is the centre of the Keys’ historic and cultural scene. In and around Old Town, visitors can tour an art museum, a pirate museum, Ernest Hemingway’s house and a butterfly conservatory. Performing arts range from nightly street theatre at Mallory Square and Masquerade Mystery Theater to more conventional playhouses. Old Town’s art galleries and stores offer everything from fine jewellery to sandals, cigars, shells and souvenirs. Up and down Highway 1, which runs the length of the Keys, shoppers will find local art, shell art, dive shops and resort-style boutiques. A variety of restaurants abound around the island and along the waterfront. Specialities include fried grouper sandwiches, Cuban black beans and rice, conch fritters, grilled hogfish, key lime pie and margaritas. The nightlife is laid-back and casual but famously fun. There’s so much to do in the Florida Keys that you won’t want to sleep. But when you must, the choices for accommodation include Key West’s charming Old Town bed-and-breakfast guest houses, full-service luxury resorts (including one on its own private island), charming motels, fishing lodges and family-sized rental beach houses. No matter which you choose, the Florida Keys will make you feel at home in paradise. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo 72 VISITFLORIDA.com/uk http://VISITFLORIDA.com/uk
