Florida Getaways 2008 - (Page 32) looking back FLORIDIANS by Garland Pollard 4 Florida Memory While fashions change, the themes of Florida remain. Here, past views of golf, beaches, sponge diving and seafood in the Sunshine State. 1 3 2 Florida through the years: For decades, images of Florida have been sent out to promote Florida’s travel, sport and seafood industries. Thousands of these photos reside at the Florida State Library and Archives in Tallahassee. Here are but a few, many of which were shot for VISIT FLORIDA’s predecessor agencies. The common denominator? Everyone is unidentified. While the styles have changed, the themes are pretty much the same: fun, sun and water. 5 6 1 Water Golfing, Daytona Beach: Taken in 1953, this group of golfers appears to have found a crab in one of the girls’ boots on an unidentified golf course. 2 Sponge diver: They are still sponge diving in Tarpon Springs. Here, a photo from 1946, taken by Ham Wright of the Department of Commerce. 3 Couple on Marco Island, April 1978: A couple on a Collier County beach photographed by Karl E. Holland. 4 Actress Susan Hayward: In this Roy Erickson photograph, the motion picture actress sits to the right of two unidentified people in Fort Lauderdale. 5 Honeymooners Jim & Lyn, January 1957: This promotional photograph was taken in front of what we suppose would have been a “romantic” abandoned cottage on Sanibel Island. 6 Shrimp workers in Apalachicola, 1967: Here, workers package shrimp for sale. The photo is mysteriously slugged both “Fernandina Beach” and “Franklin County.” Photos courtesy Department of Commerce Collection, Florida Memory Project, Florida State Library and Archives. 32 Floridians.VISITFLORIDA.com Got an idea who some of these photographs are?
