A NEW MUSEUM TIPS ITS HAT TO THE AMERICAN WEST Saddling up to gallop out of the chute in 2009, The Dolph and Janey Briscoe Western Art Museum will soon add cowboy gusto to the vibrant local arts scene. With an emphasis on the Western art of San Antonio and South Texas, this oneof-a-kind museum will celebrate the art, people and history of the great American West. The museum’s home will be the former Hertzberg Library building downtown, once local architects restore it to its original 1930s Beaux Arts splendor. Besides featuring more than 40,000 square feet of gallery and exhibition areas, the museum will include meeting space and an arts and education center. IF YOU GO: Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. (Think Central Park to New Yorkers.) A recent five-year makeover has restored the park’s natural glory and made it friendlier to hikers, joggers and bikers with the conversion of most of its streets to walking paths and biking trails. Favorite attractions include the San Antonio Zoo, where the newest exhibit, Africa Live!, lets visitors experience an African safari and a bustling African street market. Families also enjoy riding the little train that chugs around the park’s perimeter. Another mesmerizing park attraction is the Japanese Tea Garden, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where huge koi splashed with scarlet, gold and black markings swim majestically among water lilies. GOLIATH IS NOW SOARING! Goliath, the ultimate inverted coaster, now adds even more thrills to the already astounding coaster line-up at Six Flags® Fiesta Texas. Visually striking, the high-speed yellow, blue and orange trains take passengers on the ride of their lives.
