San Antonio Travel and Leisure Guide 2008 - (Page 45) HIDDEN GEMS Golf in San Antonio includes plenty of hidden gems, not to mention annual celebrations to complement a fantastic course lineup. BEST HISTORY LESSON: History is certainly served at Brackenridge Park, a course that has seen its fair share of amazing shots from some of the world’s best players. The first PGA TOUR Texas Open took place here in 1922 on the course where a unique par 3 18th hole has decided a generation of championships. MOST SCENIC HOLE: It’s nearly impossible to single out just one, but the par 4 12th at La Cantera – with its tight fairway, large bunker along the left side, a creek rushing in front of the green, and a tight putting surface angled toward the water – is certainly a worthy choice. TOUGHEST SHOT: This is another guaranteed argument-starter, but for sheer visual intimidation it’s hard to beat the par 4 9th hole at the La Cantera Palmer Course. While the hole (a slight dogleg left) seems peaceful enough from the tee, there are thick woods all along the right side. Your second shot must carry over water, which cuts across the fairway and thunders down the left edge of a very narrow green. OFF THE COURSE: Stay in shape with an early-morning run along the River Walk’s three-mile path. Cool off at the Ice Center at Northwoods. northwoodsice.net Get around town, or ride along the Mission Trail, on a bicycle. Rent one for the day at the Blue Star Brewing Co.
