Beach Getaways 2008 - (Page 28) MORE STAGE SETS: Other Miami Beach Hotels The hotels of Miami Beach are not just about supermodels. There are iconic luxury hotels, small boutique hotels and world-famous resorts. Here are a few: The National Hotel is an AAA FourDiamond hotel at 1677 Collins Ave. This 151-room landmark is best known for its 205-foot infinity pool and beach club cabanas. Dining includes the poolside bar L’Attitude and cocktail lounge called D’Lounge. 305-532-2311 or www.nationalhotel.com Just north of South Beach is the Indian Creek Hotel, a neighborly 1936 hotel with a slight Sam Spade feel. Restored to its 1936 period style, the hotel has terrazzo floors and an elevator worthy of a 1930s Warner Brothers set. In the back garden is Creek 28, a restaurant focused on regional foods. 305-531-2727 or www.indiancreekhotel.com The Fontainebleau Miami Beach is one of the best-known hotels in the world, famous for its stage-set staircase to nowhere, celebrity visits during the Sinatra era and Goldfinger body paint scene. In the past year, the 22-acre property has undergone a staggering $1 billion construction and renovation project, which will finish in July 2008. Still in place will be architect Morris Lapidus’ famous lobby and floors, but the hotel’s owners have added new luxury towers, restaurants, poolscapes and clubs. 4441 Collins Ave., 305-538-2000 or www.fontainebleau.com For information on Miami Beach hotels, see VISITFLORIDA.com/Miami_Beach. At the Kent, her style translates into a playful mixture of retro and modern and bright colors, which she uses to lift moods and make large spaces more intimate. In the lobby, rolling cube furniture in red, hot pink, purple, gold and orange and a projected luminescent oversized clock face on the wall set a playful tone. Most guest rooms are an intense hue of lavender with light wood furniture. The most unique guest room is the Lucite suite, where plastic furniture, vintage and new, mixes with metallic fabrics and pink-and-lavender walls for a fun Jetsonian look. The Pelican Hotel also has a sense of whimsy. From its overflowing sidewalk café, it looks like dozens of others along Ocean Drive – awnings canopy the sidewalk, pulsating electronic music keeps the customers awake and a maître d’ – with sleek hair and cutting-edge fashions – hangs by the entrance. Inside it’s a different story, literally. Each of the boutique hotel’s 30 rooms has a different pop culture theme, unique recycled decor and a clever name, making it the most eccentric hotel in South Beach. See Miami Hotel Architecture Online On VISITFLORIDA.com, take a video tour of South Beach hotel architecture led by VISIT FLORIDA’s Arts & Culture Expert, Jen Karetnick. From Miami Modern To Art Deco, she tells how Miami’s hotel architecture has defined the area as much as the beaches.
