All were released to the media to promote travel to Florida’s beaches. Below, beach views including Hutchinson Island, St. George Island, Panama City Beach, Tampa, Fort Pierce and Fort Walton Beach. 3 1 2 5 4 Why knot visit the beach: The state’s Florida Memory Project has preserved thousands of travel photos of Florida through the years. Here are but a few: 1 The House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar, 1965: Here, curator William Alloway shows Zoe Ellen Parker how to tie a knot at this Martin County museum. Today, the museum, the only surviving lifesaving station of its kind, is still open. More info at elliottmuseumfl.org. 2 Driftwood and Ruth Hall, 1952: On St. George Island, a model named Ruth Hall rests by driftwood. See www.apalachicolabay.org. 3 Panama City Beach, 1966: Two unidentified women play with what appears to be fishnet floats. 4 Sand Ski, 1970: A group dune skis on a Fort Walton Beach in October 1970 (dune climbing is no longer allowed). 5 Tyrone Power, Tampa, 1948: Actor Tyrone Power greets “enthralled Florida beauties” named (not given in order) Jeanne Crow, Betty Rodes, Evelyn Dupes, Janet Ruth Crockett and Anna M. Stewart on May 31, 1948. 6 Miss Sandy Shoes, 1972: Here, an unidentified “Miss Sandy Shoes” appears to have lost her cowgirl festival boots on the beach near Fort Pierce. The Sandy Shoes Festival started in 1957 and was reintroduced after a hiatus in 2002.
