Florida's Gulf Islands Visitors Guide® 2008 - (Page 24) TIME Madira Bickel Mound State Archeological Site View evidence of an ancient Native American culture at Madira Bickel Mound State Archeological Site on Terra Ceia Island in Palmetto. The 10-acre state archeological site – Florida’s first – features a 20-foot-tall, flat-topped ceremonial mound, made up of sand, shell and debris. The site is also a Florida State Park and it is listed on the national register of historic places. Excavations show that Native Americans occupied the site beginning some 2,000 years ago. Archeologists have speculated that the site was the village of Ucita, referred to in narratives of the DeSoto expeditioners. Named after Madira Bickel of Sarasota, who with her husband, Karl, purchased and donated the mound and surrounding property to the state in 1948. The site also features picnic areas. Future plans include a nature trail and a kiosk with historical information. to be at one with nature. trees & plants Pliny Reasoner of Reasoner’s Nursery in Bradenton introduced exotic plants to Florida in the 1800s.
