Florida Family Getaways - 2008 - (Page 40) looking back OLD FLORIDA by Garland Pollard 4 Still Here Today Florida has plenty of new attractions, but its old destinations are holding up quite well, thank you. Here are a few images from Florida places of yesterday that are still around today. Who would have thought that Florida had a stagecoach era? 2 1 3 Time travel is indeed possible in the Sunshine State. Much of what brought folks here years ago is still around. 1. At Crandon Park Zoo, Miami. Miami writer Joyce Marie Taylor sent this photo of her grandmother Anna Sapp standing out front. While the zoo is no longer at Miami’s Crandon Park, its gardens and carousel are. The zoo is now the Miami Metrozoo. 2. Here, a party (undated) at the Ca d’Zan. John and Mable Ringling enjoyed throwing lavish parties at their Sarasota mansion, Ca d’Zan. Today, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art still hosts parties. 3. The construction of the Ca d’Zan around 1926. Visitors can tour the mansion and see Ringling’s art collection. 4. Bar at Columbia Restaurant, 1905. At this restaurant in Tampa’s Ybor City, visitors can still eat in the room pictured above and see the original mahogany bar. The Columbia now has locations in St. Petersburg, Sarasota, St. Augustine, Clearwater Beach, Celebration and West Palm Beach. 5. Coaching picnic party, Lake Wales. A stagecoach appears to be stuck in the mud in this undated photo sent to us by Chalet Suzanne Inn & Restaurant. The hotel, known for its soups, doesn’t know the date, but it was after the inn opened in 1931. 5 If you go: Ringling at Ringling.com; Columbia Restaurant at www.columbiarestaurant.com; Miami Metrozoo at www.miamimetrozoo.com; Chalet Suzanne at chaletsuzanne.com.
