Teens C the great calusa blueway T he paddling trail established in 2002 expanded in fall 2007 to include a third phase on the Caloosahatchee River and its tributaries. Phases one and two have markers, which are spaced about one-quarter mile apart. The trail traverses mangrove estuaries, sheltered bays and lush creeks. Put-ins are designated along the trail, and camping is available at Koreshan State Historic Site on the Estero River, Cayo Costa State Park and Caloosahatchee Regional Park. Paddling visitors can always opt to rough it by day and stay in a plush resort by night, an increasingly popular option. A quiet paddle along the trail brings native birds and animals in view, and fishing guides are sharing the bounty found in the blueway’s mangrove tunnels and along the undulating coastline with fisherfolk eager to hook snapper, trout and redfish. Paddlers can bring their own craft, or rent from (or take a tour with) any of dozens of outfitters in the area.
