To help these tiny turtles reach the Gulf, visitors can be alert to the location of turtle nests and honor regulations. From May 1st to October 31st, residents and visitors on Lee County’s beaches are required to shield lighting that can shine on the beach, where it may disorient turtle hatchlings who are drawn towards the natural light emanating from the Gulf’s horizon (Sanibel has year-round bans on beach lighting). When walking the beach, beware of yellow caution tape, which indicates a nest site.
