Fort Myers & Sanibel/Lee County Traveler's Guide 2008 - (Page 51) fish finders Lynn Hall Memorial Park pier Bokeelia pier on Pine Island ® Piers & Bridges Explore the many facets of fishing from a fixed structure: piers and bridges lead anglers to snook, grouper and redfish – and to the expertise of the locals. The Fort Myers Beach Pier is a favorite, as are the Sanibel Lighthouse Pier and the self-proclaimed “world’s fishingest bridge” in the community of Matlacha. ® Surfcasting Unlike fishing on the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico surfcasting requires a shorter rod and a shorter cast because the species feed and run close to shore. Standard fishing equipment will suffice to land a catch. ® Family Fishing Angling is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Some local captains specialize in taking parents and kids out on the water. Their top tip: Keep a family fishing trip short – kids’ attention spans will wane. Or, combine fishing with another activity, such as shelling. rom the dawn of history, area waters have yielded up a bounty of fish for the table and trophy wall. Folks just starting out try deep-sea fishing on a party boat (one that takes dozens out at a time); a more personalized experience (though more expensive) is available with one of the many fishing charter captains who limit excursions to four to six anglers. Both provide fishing tackle for those who don’t bring their own. Piers and bridges, as well as shallow, wading waters, put fishermen and women in casting range of species such as mangrove snapper, sea trout and pompano. The free fishing pier jutting out from Lynn Hall Memorial Park on Fort Myers Beach even has an outfitter offering bait and rod-andreel rentals. Other favorite spots include: under the Matanzas Pass Bridge on the Fort Myers Beach side and the fishing pier at Sanibel’s Lighthouse Park Beach, which has a deep hole that attracts grouper.
