Fort Myers & Sanibel/Lee County Traveler's Guide 2008 - (Page 55) Aquatic Mammals Dolphins cruise the waters of the sound and bay in search of fish. Herbivorous manatees feed on sea grasses. Raccoons forage for food in the mangrove’s stalky roots and on oyster bars. After eating the succulent interiors, they discard the shells, which decay, further enriching the detritus. Fish Species that feed on smaller fish and crustaceans in the nooks and crannies of the mangrove prop roots include snook, snapper and redfish. Mangrove roots are submerged twice a day, and the trees have adapted to their saline environment. MANGROVE TREE CRAB Sea Grasses provide shelter for seahorses and some of the most popular shells found on the beaches. They are also the foundation for an entire food chain.
