Northwest Florida Getaways 2008 - (Page 40) looking back by Garland Pollard 3 Truman Show? 1 Northwest Florida has a fascinating history. Come along as we meet a cowboy, a riverboat captain and a former president. 2 4 No, not the movie filmed in Seaside, but President Harry Truman: Generations have come, year after year, for the Northwest’s beaches, seafood and laid-back way of life. 1 Cowboy in Bonifay, 1949: If you go to a soda fountain in downtown Bonifay, you might meet a cowboy! That’s the message in this photo taken to promote the Bonifay rodeo. Bonifay is home to The Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo, which began in 1946. Hosted by the local Kiwanis Club, it is held each year in October. See www.bonifaykiwanis.org. 2 Lighthouse keeper, undated: Here, an unidentified (tie-wearing!) keeper cleans the lens of the Pensacola Lighthouse. The keeper’s house is open by appointment or seasonally. See www.floridalighthouses.org. 3 Day campers, St. Andrews State Park, 1955: A group lesson on this Panama City beach, taken by C.H. Schaeffer, Florida Park Service. 4 Red snapper, Pensacola, 1948: In this photograph, fishermen in Pensacola are unloading their catch. 5 President Harry Truman riding through Valparaiso, undated: Here, Truman in a convertible. The photo is undated, but it is during his presidency as the seal is on a flag on the front. 6 Capt. Poley McDaniel in Wewahitchka with replica of the steamboat W.C. Bradley, undated: Here, Capt. McDaniel, the last living riverboat captain in Florida’s Northwest, poses with a replica of his stern-wheeler.
