Florida Outdoor Getaways 2008 - (Page 40) looking back OUTDOORS by Garland Pollard 3 Early Nature-Tourism Florida is the original natural paradise. For generations, visitors have come to play outside in the Sunshine State. 1 2 4 Through the years: The main appeal of Florida is being in the sun. Here, a look back at Florida’s outdoors. Thankfully, all of these areas are still enjoyed by visitors today. 1 Boating, Biscayne Bay, 1958: Here, two unidentified men prepare for a fishing trip in Miami. 2 Camping at Fanning Springs State Park: In May 1967, these women were making pancakes, one with a chin-curl bob hairdo. Today, this Suwannee River park, known for its manatees, has camping, cabins and picnic areas. 3 Tortoise at Highlands Hammock: This 1947 photo shows these fossilized remains found in Highlands Hammock State Park. It is still there, greeting guests at the park’s restaurant, Hammock Inn. 4 Ross Allen milks a snake: Here, herpetologist Ross Allen, who ran the Ross Allen Reptile Institute at Silver Springs, demonstrates his crowd-pleasing trick: milking a rattler for venom! While the institute is gone, Silver Springs is still going strong. 5 Parasailing in Dixie County: This, of course, is a professional stunt. It’s the Ski-Devils performance team doing a show west of Gainesville on the Suwannee River in 1961. Today, the county is popular for its springs and the Suwannee.
