The loss of such heroes became a battle cry at the Battle of San Jacinto and the victory produced the new Republic of Texas. This shrine of Texas liberty still stands in all its glory and offers visitors the chance to feel the spirit of those who gave their lives for Texas independence. Be sure to peruse the Alamo Cenotaph, which stands directly in front of the building. This sculpture pays tribute to all those who lost their lives in the battle of the Alamo. 210-225-1391, www.thealamo.org. I The Institute of Texan Cultures offers a look at the nearly 50 different cultures that make up San Antonio and their contributions. Under the auspices of the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Institute is well known for its special exhibits, but more importantly for the Texas Folklife Festival, held each summer on the grassy knolls of the Institute. Music, food, crafts and traditions are demonstrated firsthand to the 100,000 visitors who come to participate each year. 210-458-2330, www.texancultures.utsa.edu. C. THE INSTITUTE OF TEXAN CULTURES stroll. If you’re aching to take a peek inside, The San Antonio Conservation Society owns one of the grandest, the Steves Homestead, open for daily tours. Filled with antiques, it also boasts the city’s first indoor swimming pool. Visiting in April? Make the trek to the King William Fair, a large neighborhood festival featuring food and fun. 210-224-6163, www.saconservation.org. D. HEMISFAIR PARK AND TOWER OF THE AMERICAS F. ARCHITECTURAL MUST-SEES: SPANISH GOVERNOR’S PALACE, NAVARRO HOUSE HemisFair Park features the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, the Downtown All-Around Playground and, of course, the most recognizable icon in San Antonio’s skyline, the Tower of the Americas. Visitors can take the one-minute elevator ride up 579 feet to the top and view the city from 360 degrees. For those who’ve worked up an appetite thanks to the spectacular view, the Tower Restaurant is a calm respite. With a contemporary interior featuring rich wood and leather, it’s a great place to stop for a beverage or a bite…and the view is always changing, thanks to the rotating floor. At night, the panoramic view offered at the tower is priceless. 210-207-8615. Many early 18th-century buildings stand in the city’s center – if only these walls could talk. Some believe they can, thanks to a spiritual presence.Although hauntings are difficult to confirm, the Jose Navarro House (once owned by one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence) is said to be inhabited by spirits who move furniture and fill the rooms with strange energy. Located down the street from Market Square, the Spanish Governor’s Palace (once home to the Spanish Province of Texas) is also rumored to be haunted – the spirit of a former servant is said to roam its halls. Open for self-guided tours, it is the only remaining example in Texas of the lifestyle of wealthy Spanish landowners. 210-226-4801 (Navarro House); As you make your way around the river, don’t miss La Villita, a historic village erected in the early 18th century. It sits on the riverbanks and features artisans, painters, glassblowers, jewelers and candlemakers, many working on site. Visitors can ramble through the stone-paved streets and take in quaint shops, galleries and even grab a bite to eat. La Villita is also the site of one of Fiesta’s most popular events, Night in Old San Antonio. This four-day festival is celebrated in mid-April. 210-224-6163, www.lavillita.com. H. LA VILLITA E. THE ALAMO 210-224-0601 (Spanish Governor’s Mansion). Even if you remember next to nothing from history class, chances are you’ll remember the Alamo. In 1836, 150 men took cover behind its walls after General Santa Anna’s army declared retaliation against Texans for their attempt to extricate themselves from Mexican rule. Even such heroes as William Barrett Travis, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie couldn’t withstand the forces What began as a neighborhood for the city’s wealthy German merchants in the mid-19th century now serves as one of San Antonio’s most elegant areas. The King William Historic District features street after street of well-preserved (and privately-owned) Victorian homes that just beg for a leisurely G. KING WILLIAM HISTORIC DISTRICT San Antonio’s world-famous River Walk, Paseo del Rio in Spanish, winds through the downtown and creates an entirely new way to see the city. Above, the bustling traffic hums, but take a few steps down to the cool tropical lushness and a new world awaits. While at street level people and cars travel in linear paths to destinations, one can get just about anywhere down on the river level, although at a slower, meandering pace. As even locals will tell you, the sights along the river are worth the few extra minutes it takes to traverse this path. In the mood to relax? River taxis will shuttle and enlighten you with points of interest along the way. 210-227-4262, www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com. I.
