St. Petersburg • Clearwater 2009 - (Page 53) LINGER IN LARGO PUBLIC ART 686 Mile 15 NEW TO THE TRAIL LARGO TAYLOR PARK P Keep an eye out for artist Mark Fuller’s public art. Each creation has a railroad theme in tribute to the trail’s original function. You’ll find Fuller’s pieces starting in Tarpon Springs, then farther along the trail in Palm Harbor, Dunedin, Clearwater, Belleair, Largo, Seminole, Gulfport and St. Petersburg. Take time to examine each unique “arc” and bring a camera so you can add to your scrapbook. Take a rest beneath the shade trees at Largo’s Taylor Park. Watch the wading birds and alligators exist peacefully, side by side, in the pond. With restrooms, picnic tables and shelters in case of rain, this is a good place to rest and recharge. 688 RIDGECREST PARK P TRAIL TIPS WALSINGHAM PARK P The newest spur off the trail runs through downtown St. Petersburg and then makes a northerly turn to Weedon Island. These new spurs, completed in 2008, are made up of various types of surfaces and differ from the more contiguous, paved, original stretch of the trail. On some segments of these spurs, you’ll be on a roadway bike lane or gravel pathways. With such varied scenery, you’ll enjoy the journey as well as the destinations! There is no shortage of restaurants, both sit-down and take-out, as well as convenience stores, so there is no need to pack lunch. The Guide to the Pinellas Trail, a pocketsize flip chart and map, will help you plan your journey. The guide, available at most public libraries and chambers of commerce, lists everything from pay phones to bike shops in case you need to fix a flat. The trail is open only during daylight hours. Pedestrians and handicapped visitors have the right of way. Bicyclists must obey all traffic signals – that means no rolling through STOP signs. Rules are strictly enforced. Cyclists are not permitted to ride with headphones, and those under age 16 must wear a helmet at all times. Obey all posted speed limits. Racing and race training are not permitted on the trail. ST.
