St. Augustine Ponte Vedra 2008 Travel Planner - (Page 6) Itineraries Whether you’re coming as a family, a couple, or a solo vacationer, St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches is your perfect getaway. We have historic sites, golf courses and spas for the grown-ups; fun attractions and animal adventures for the kids; and beaches for everyone. Below are some ideas for your trip: ST. AUGUSTINE Only in St. Augustine can you see, smell, touch and, if you are quiet, hear the past come alive. Step back in time on these telltale tours. Day One: In the Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum guides clad in period clothing will wind you through more than one acre of archeological artifacts. Don’t be surprised to encounter some friendly residents and craftspeople from the mid-18th century. Another highlight is a visit to the Government House Museum. Day Two: Enjoy peaceful nature walks, boating, bird watching, fishing and kayaking at Fort Matanzas. It may be serene today, but on this site in 1565, the Spanish killed 250 French Huguenots over control of Florida. In 1742, the Spanish completed Fort Matanzas, a small fortified watchtower that guarded the southern entrance to St. Augustine. Day Three: Reflect on the forces that have shaped world history during a visit to Castillo de San Marcos. The oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S., Castillo de San Marcos was constructed by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695. Later, the British, Spanish and Americans all made changes to it before it was retired as an active fort in 1833. The Castillo was proclaimed a national monument in 1924. PONTE VEDRA Crisp sea air, immaculate golf and dining and the utmost luxury define Ponte Vedra, the seaside hideaway that caters to your every whim. Day One: Introduce yourself to the natural beauty of Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve – a 55,000-acre preserve that shows off the simple elegance of Florida’s quiet, natural coastline. At dinner, dine on fresh seafood at the Seafoam Room at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, an area landmark that has hosted guests since the 1920s. Day Two: Ponte Vedra is known worldwide for its golf courses. The PGA TOUR Headquarters is located here at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass, a two-course club designed by Pete Dye that hosts THE PLAYERS Championship each spring. The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club also has two courses that grace the Atlantic shore. The World Golf Hall of Fame and World Golf Village are to the south of Ponte Vedra. View the personal clubs and memorabilia donated by greats such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Day Three: Close out your trip with a spa day and retail therapy. Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa trumps all with its Signature Sawgrass Aroma Body Glow treatment. Across the way, Sawgrass Village’s 20 specialty stores await you.
