The World’s Largest Teapot, or so they say, sits just outside of Chester in the state’s Northern Panhandle. At 3,030 feet long and 876 feet high, the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville is the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere (second-longest in the world), and is also the second-highest bridge in the country. North America’s largest cone-shaped prehistoric burial mound is in the town of Moundsville. It’s 69 feet high, 900 feet in circumference and 50 feet high. Organ Cave, near Ronceverte, is the thirdlargest cave in the United States and the largest in the state. The longest city block in the world is in downtown Charleston’s historic East End. The only house in the world made entirely out of coal stands in downtown Williamson. Maybe it’s the peaceful mountain setting, but West Virginia has posted one of the lowest crime rates in the country for years. West Virginia is the only state created by presidential proclamation, as a result of the Civil War.
