However to truly appreciate West Virginia and the many facets of the incredible people who call it home, you need only to delve into the state’s storied history, cultural richness and vision for the future. The West Virginia Division of Culture and History is responsible for bringing together the state’s past, present and future through programs and services in the areas of archives and history, the arts, historic preservation and museums. The Cultural Center in the State Capitol Complex in Charleston is your gateway to everything West Virginian. The Center will be home to the newly renovated West Virginia State Museum scheduled to open in the first half of 2009. The museum will afford visitors a step-by-step walk through West Virginia’s history from a prehistoric coal forest to modern-day events chronicling its progress. Here you also will find the state archives library, which is a premier resource for historians and genealogists around the state and the country. Following its launch in 2007, the Collegiate Series continues to feature lectures and performances from Marshall University and West Virginia University as well as other schools from around the state. In addition, the Center presents Cultural Heritage Lectures, Garden Festivals, and biennial events including the State Thespian Festival and the West Virginia Juried Exhibition.
