West Virginia Travel Guide 2009 - (Page 35) WV Rocks! < wild & wonderful rginia st Vi We By Steven Keith S! CK RO Looking for a great spot to take in the Mountain State’s breathtaking landscape? Just look up… West Virginia is full of dramatic overlooks and rock outcroppings that offer views like no other. g Seneca Rocks: The granddaddy of them all, Seneca Rocks is one of the state’s best-known and most-photographed landmarks – not to mention a regional hot spot for climbers. Rising nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River, twin white and gray Tuscarora quartzite peaks strike a double-camelback pose high in the sky. On any given sunny day, you’ll see climbers dangling from Seneca Rocks. Due to the hardness of the sandstone and the degree of difficulty, Seneca Rocks offers a climbing opportunity found nowhere else in the East. (There are more than 375 mapped routes and a couple of nearby climbing schools.) But you don’t have to harness up to enjoy the same breathtaking views. A moderately inclined hiking trail takes you to an observation deck up top, offering towering views of pristine countryside and a feeling that you are truly standing on top of the world. continued www.WVTOURISM.com 35 http://www.WVTOURISM.com
