Most streams open for catch-and-release fly-fishing in March, with general opening in early May. Both the Big Green River and Castle Rock located near Mineral Point are popular streams. For more information on fishing check the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website – dnr.wi.gov/org/water/ fhp/fish. bicycling and hiking The hills surrounding Mineral Point are some of the most beautiful areas for bicycling and hiking in the upper Midwest. The Cheese Country Trail is a shared use trail for ATV’s, horseback riding, snowmobiles, bicycles and pedestrians. The 47 mile trail runs from Mineral Point to Monroe, has 57 overpasses, including a 440-ft. bridge spanning the Pecatonica River. Because the trail has a soft surface, fat tired bikes are recommended. www.tricountytrails.com. The 40 mile Military Ridge Trail connects Dodgeville and Fitchburg, near Madison, WI. A gentle grade of only 2 to 5 percent provides for a very pleasant ride. The trail is open for hiking, biking, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing. Try one or all of the many bicycling routes we have identified in the three southwestern counties of Wisconsin.
