Mineral Point - Visitors Guide 2008 - (Page 6) orchard lawn the gundry house Lawn was a self-sufficient estate, Orchardwith gardens, orchards, barns, a carriage house… and a magnificent Italianate house built shortly after the Civil War for the Gundry family, one of Mineral Point’s early merchant families. For 68 years, three generations of the family lived, worked, played and graciously entertained on the eleven-acre property overlooking the city. The last Mineral Point Gundry passed away in 1936. After three years of trying to sell or even give the great estate away, the family heirs hired a wrecking contractor. Most outbuildings fell. The house was next. The wrecking ball was poised to proceed when eleven residents got together to stop it. Together they contributed $800 and bought out the demolition contract. The family deeded it to the newly formed Mineral Point Historical Society and Orchard Lawn became a community landmark. But the story of Orchard Lawn is about more than just saving an old house – it is the story of how historic architecture can be used to create a richer cultural life. Today it is the community living room – a magical setting for special events and family gatherings. Phase 2 of an extensive restoration will be in progress this year, but the house will remain open for tours from May 30 – Sept. 28. Visitors will be able to watch the work in progress as this magnificent old home is restored to its original glory. The Jammin’ on the Porch series of concerts and lawn picnics are planned for the second Friday of each month May – September. Founders Day (July 31, 2008) is a gala event that celebrates the legacy of the home and the historical society. This year the stage is set in the 1920s.
