When the sun
starts to rise, I
head straight to
the beach with my
dog, Snickers. He's a Hurricane Katrina
rescue dog with a love of sandy paws.
We go to the dog-friendly beach by the
pier and comb for sea glass and sand
dollars. Watching the sun as it rises
over the palm trees. I could do this
every morning for the rest of my life.

I have an adventurous
spirit, and one of the
coolest things I've ever done is kayaking
the sea caves at Channel Islands National
Park. Some of the caves are low and
narrow. Others have wide openings that
almost feel like a movie set. And while
you're maneuvering the kayak in the ocean
waters, there's marine life all around.

I always see
something new and beautiful while hiking
the Ventura Botanical Garden Trail. My
favorite places to stroll are the Chilean
and South African gardens, plus the exhibit
of California Native plants. The views of
the city, ocean, and Channel Islands are
stunning from up there.

Cycling along the
coast is a great
way to spend a
morning or afternoon. I like to rent a bike
from Ventura Bike Depot in downtown
Ventura and then ride up the coast on
a relatively flat, paved trail with ocean
views the entire way. You can stop at
the beach, cool off with a dip in the
ocean, and pull over for scenic overlooks
whenever you want. My favorite time to
ride is on sunny Sunday mornings and
when I do this route, I like to stop at The
Shoals restaurant at the Cliff House Inn
on the ocean for a delicious brunch. Sip
a mimosa and take in the views before
heading back to Ventura. Or, on days
when I want to venture farther, I rent an
electric bike and ride to Island Brewing
Company in Carpinteria.

I often take photo
walks around
downtown. I'll walk up to the Botanical
Gardens, behind City Hall, then go over to
the cross at Grant Park for the view. Then
I'll head back downtown and stroll over
to the Mission. I always end at the beach
at sunset, and I always time this for the
golden hour, about an hour before sunset.
