The newest exhibit, Shapes of Sounds, is an invitation to engage with sound experiments. Other areas to check out include the RoboLab, the Paradox Café and La vida de agua (the life of water). Knee-Hi-Sci provides the youngest explorers with an enclosed space equipped with engaging options for play and discovery. Dinosaurs To Mars: The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Courtesy of ¡explora! Location: Old Town, Mountain Road The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science has eight permanent exhibit halls, spanning 12 billion years, from the Paleozoic Era, to the present day. Other current exhibits include Making Tracks on Mars, STARTUP and Stan, the T. Rex. See page 18 for details. The museum is also home to the Extreme Screen DynaTheater and the LodeStar Astronomy Center, Atomic Power, Snakes and Jewels: Three Unique Museums in Old Town Location: Old Town Albuquerque offers a variety of fun-filled itineraries for families just a short drive from your hotel. The National Atomic Museum, the Turquoise Museum and the American International Rattlesnake Museum, located in Old Town, are three uniquely Albuquerque destinations. The Atomic Museum tells the story of the Atomic Age – from Marie Curie to the Manhattan Project and beyond – and New Mexico’s role in it. The Turquoise Museum offers visitors a look at turquoise mines, their locations, and the opportunity to view rare stones. The Rattlesnake Museum houses the largest live collection of rattlesnake species in the world. Botanical Beauty, Animals, and Sea Creatures: Albuquerque Bio Park Location: Zoo, 10th Street in Barelas; Gardens and Aquarium, west of Old Town www.itsatrip.org The Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden, Tingley Beach and the Rio Grande Zoo, collectively dubbed “the BioPark,” located just west of Old Town, invite interactions with various Gulf of Mexico saltwater species, including the toothy inhabitants of the 285,000-gallon shark tank. The Botanic Garden showcases a variety of flora and fauna, an interactive Butterfly Pavilion, Children’s Fantasy Garden, the Rio Grande 1920s model Heritage Farm, plus the new Japanese Garden. The Zoo spans 64-acres housing 250 species. An open-air passenger train loops through the entire park. Family Fun: Area Entertainment Centers Location: NE Heights Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque Int’l Balloon Museum Three amusement centers offer fun for the whole family, in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights. They include: Cliff’s Amusement Park, Hinkle Family Fun Center and IT’Z. Up, Up and Away Location: Northern Albuquerque The Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum offers exhibits and programs on art, history and the science of hot-air ballooning, plus close proximity to the grounds for International Balloon Fiesta activities. For another high flying experience, ride the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway to the top of the Sandia Mountains for spectacular views in every direction. Short excursions north and east of Albuquerque, reveal the eclectic installation at the Tinkertown Museum, and an engine-revving experience at the Unser Museum.
