Ask the Capitol operator to connect you to your legislator’s office, then ask to speak with the aide who handles the specific issue you are interested in. Let the aide know what bill or amendment you want your legislator to cosponsor or vote for, and why. • Jot down notes prior to your call so you can clearly state how this will help military members and their families. • Ask for action. WRite • Your first paragraph should simply state your purpose. If your letter pertains to a specific piece of legislation, identify the bill number. • Be courteous and to the point. Include the pertinent information, but try to keep your letter to one page and one issue, if possible. If you have more than one issue, it’s best to address them in separate letters. • Your last sentence should restate the specific action you want the legislator to take (“Please cosponsor H.R and do all you can to ensure it is enacted this year.”) • Address correspondence to a senator or representative as follows: The Honorable (full name) United states senate/House of Representatives Washington, DC 20510 (senate) 20515 (House) Note: When writing to the Chair of a Committee or the Speaker of the House, it is proper to address them as: Dear Madam/Mr. Speaker or Madam Chairwoman/ Mr. Chairman. 6
