Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS) — a laser weapon small enough to be mounted on an airborne tactical platform but with enough energy to disable or destroy its targets. The Boeing-built airborne laser currently is being tested and is an example of an aircraft-mounted laser weapon — but it takes a Boeing 747 to lift it. HELLADS aims to shrink the system to about the size of a refrigerator so it can be mounted on existing tactical military aircraft. “To maximize the capabilities of a laser weapon on the battleﬁeld, we need to be able to scale power output from levels low enough for use as a sensor to ﬁnd targets, to levels sufﬁcient to temporarily incapacitate, and up to lethal levels,” says TTO program manager Don Woodbury. “Imagine using a wide beam for search and track, a more focused beam to disable, and a tightly focused beam to destroy targets — all in an integrated package that shares a single aperture.” DARPA’s ability to quickly adapt to changes in conﬂicts enables the agency to stay ahead of the technological curve. No one at TTO is interested in incremental improvement of legacy systems. “Policy and planning are based on the perception of what can be done,” says program manager Daniel Newman. “New technologies enable and inspire new visions and ConOps, just as the ﬁrst news of a UAV ﬁring a weapon changed a paradigm, literally overnight.” Former Apple CEO John Sculley once said, “The best way to be ready for the future is to invent it.” At DARPA, the future is already off the drawing boards and on its way to the battleﬁeld.
