Martin Luther King Jr. The monument will sit between the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech during a civil Celebrate 200 Years of NOAA I n 1807, Thomas Jefferson established the first federal science agency — Survey of the Coast — to support safe maritime commerce. This February, that agency’s descendant, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), celebrates 200 years of devotion to science, service, and stewardship. It began with President Jefferson’s vision to support his fledgling nation’s economy with safe maritime commerce. NOAA has expanded from an agency committed to surveying the coastline and seafloor and creating nautical charts. Included as one of the nation’s seven uniformed services, NOAA now not only forecasts the daily weather, predicts and warns of severe weather, and monitors and predicts global climate change but also breaks new ground in environmental research, promotes sustainable fisheries, and explores the world’s oceans. Today, NOAA has partnered with more than 60 countries and the European Commission to develop a global Earth Observation System that, over the next decade, will revolutionize our understanding of Earth and how it works.
