Military Officer - February 2007 - (Page 23) rapidfire Fore! T N Rolling On early 70 recently disabled war heroes — part of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded War Veterans — competed in the 2006 New York City Marathon. The team is sponsored by the Achilles Track Club, a nonprofit organization that gives disabled people the opportunity to compete in a variety of sporting events. Sgt. Neil Duncan, USA, a first-time marathon participant from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, finished in first place this year for the Freedom Team. Duncan lost both of his legs in an improvised explosive device blast while serving in Iraq in 2005. The majority of the veterans are amputees who participate using specially designed hand-crank wheelchairs that are operated by the competitor’s upper-body strength. All Freedom Team members finished the marathon, an empowering achievement for them, says Mary Bryant, vice president and director of the Freedom Team. he 24th Annual National Retired Military Golf Classic will be held May 29–June 2 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on five golf courses at the Myrtle Beach Golf Complex. Only 872 men and 132 women will be accepted for this event — the largest retired military golf event in the world. More than $160,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded. A Chrysler automobile will be given away as a special hole-in-one prize for both men and women. In the past, and with the support of Chrysler, the Classic has given a total of more than $35,000 to the Fisher House Foundation in support of America’s servicemembers. Applications were sent in December to those on the mailing list, but they also are available at most military golf courses across the country. Priority goes to golfers who have participated in previous classics. After Feb. 1, acceptance will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be established once the Classic is full. To request an application, call (866) 469-7853, or mail your request to National Retired Military Golf Classic, PO Box 3608, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578. Miscellany: Patriotic Photos and Chocolate PATRIOTIC PHOTO CONTEST: Time is running out to enter MOAA’s 2007 Patriotic Photo Contest. Entries must fall into at least one of four categories — camaraderie, military family, on duty, or vintage — and must be received no later than 4 p.m. Eastern time, March 31. Mail entries to MOAA Photo Contest, 201 N. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314. To learn more, visit www.moaa.org/magazine/photocontest. *NUTRITION NOTES: Recent studies have shown that chocolate could lower blood pressure, prevent heart disease, lower cancer risk, reduce pain, and improve mood, but research is at the earliest stage. Skeptics of these possible benefits point out that chocolate is high in calories — a one-ounce bar has 150 calories. A milk chocolate bar is about half sugar, with most of the remainder being fat, though milk adds some protein. And while chocolate has relatively little caffeine, it contains the stimulant theobromine and other chemically similar compounds. Whether you think chocolate will benefit your health or not, keep in mind that it’s a traditional — and tasty — gift for your loved one this Valentine’s Day.
