Check out his picture and proﬁle, at right; you’re going to see a lot of him. Barry and I are working on new ideas to make MOAA chapters the place to be. We can offer chapters tools to be even more relevant to members and prospective members. That’s not to say what’s in place now isn’t working, because it is. But as times change, so must our strategies. I’ll highlight three initiatives to show where the department is headed. We’re using a chapter-mapping project as a better way to focus We’re also working closely with MOAA’s The Ofﬁcer Placement Service (TOPS) to increase TOPS representation in chapters and work with regional coordinators toward the goal of expanding our networking capability across the country. By offering networking through chapters in communities where current members and new retirees are settling and looking for employment opportunities, MOAA has a great shot at making them chapter members. Finally, we’ll build on the success of an initiative from last year’s Chapter Presidents’ Symposium in Savannah, Ga., by taking chapter leadership training on the road to interested state councils for their new and prospective chapter leaders. His wife, Barbara, is an Army civil service employee and human resource specialist. “I’ve been impressed by this association since the ﬁrst time I attended one of MOAA’s career transition-assistance seminars,” says Wright. “I’m excited that I’ve been given this opportunity to continue to serve and help this organization meet its mission.” CAL-MOAA Rallies in State Capital Field Reports Department Welcomes New Deputy resources in standing up new chapters. This effort matches chapters and congressional districts with key members of Congress to see if coverage is where it should be. Where it isn’t, we’ll further analyze the MOAA membership base in the area and ask local councils and chapters to help stand up a new or satellite chapter. 44 MILITARY OFFICER FEBRUARY 2007 T M OAA’s new deputy director for the Council and Chapter Affairs Department, Col. Barry Wright, USA-Ret., began work Nov. 3. Wright is a 1974 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and received his commission through its ROTC program. An Army War College graduate, Wright served as an infantry ofﬁcer, and his assignments he California Council of Chapters sponsored the CAL-MOAA Rally Oct. 2628 in Sacramento. The event drew council and chapter leaders from throughout the state, including 97year-old MOAA Shasta Country Chapter President Col. Richard Locke Jr., USAR-Ret., the oldest president in MOAA’s afﬁliated chapter system. During the rally, CAL-MOAA members visited the state capital and met with representatives from the state Senate and assembly veterans’ committees as well as a key state veterans’ lobbyist.
