Military Officer - February 2008 - (Page 42) chaptersinaction Chapter Achievements joined after learning about The Scholarship Fund of MOAA. The St. Petersburg Chapter recognizes its donors in the chapter’s newsletter, too, and is just $2,000 shy of fulfilling its commitment. Past president Capt. Don Freese, USNR-Ret., says members already are considering establishing a second designated scholarship. Inspiring contributions In Illinois, an anonymous chapter member offered to donate 50 percent of the money needed to establish a designated scholarship through MOAA, as long as the members of the Western Suburban Chicago Chapter raised the other half. The chapter members met the challenge and learned the anonymous donor was auxiliary chapter member Mary J. DeThorne. Their joint scholarship — the Raymond J. and Joan Marie DeThorne Memorial and Western Suburban Chicago Chapter — honors DeThorne’s late husband and daughter and the chapter. Chapter members continued to give and established a second scholarship in the chapter’s name. The Southwest Oklahoma Chapter also has its own scholarship program, which is funded by donations from area businesses. However, members are working hard to match an anonymous donation so they can establish their own MOAA designated scholarship. “[Our chapter needs] to raise $12,500,” says Southwest Oklahoma Chapter board member Col. Bill Furtado, USA-Ret. “If the fundraising goes well, we’ll establish more designated scholarships.” 42 MILITARY OFFICER FEBRUARY 2008 General Greene (Pa.) Chapter members Lt. Col. Sam Slyman, USARet., and Col. Richard Flock, USA-Ret., place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia during a Sept. 20, 2007, trip to Washington, D.C. From the Field: General Greene (Pa.) Chapter The General Greene (Pa.) Chapter raised more than $11,800 so 193 World War II veterans could visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., Sept. 20, 2007, and Oct. 8, 2007. During the first trip, veterans visited Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Two university film majors accompanied the group and plan to release a documentary of the journey free-of-charge. Virginia Council of Chapters The Virginia Council of Chapters (VCOC) members won “An Evening With MOAA” as part of the 2007 “Give Me 10!” program. Chapter leaders and representatives and their spouses were treated to dinner at the Williamsburg Inn in Virginia. To win, 75 percent of a council’s chapters must participate in the program, and each of those chapters must recruit at least 10 new members. At press time, VCOC members had recruited more than 1,019 members, with the Southside Virginia Chapter recruiting 630 of those members. MO — Contributors are Col. Lee Lange II, USMC-Ret., director; Col. Barry Wright, USA-Ret., deputy director, Council and Chapter Affairs; and Kris Ann Hegle. For submission information, see page 20.
