Investing in a mutual fund is not free. A mutual fund is a portfolio of securities that someone has to manage, and that management costs money. Typically, a fund’s share class — A-, B-, C-, or “no-load” — indicates its fee structure. A-shares charge a one-time, up-front sales charge each time you invest in the fund — called front-loading — as well as an annual management fee. A-shares usually have a lower annual management fee than B- and C-shares. B-shares have no up-front charge but apply a sales charge to withdraw money in the first few years. This back-end charge decreases each year until it finally disappears. The annual management fee with B-shares tends to be higher than A-shares but lower than C-shares. C-shares typically do not charge up-front or back-end sales charges but have the highest annual management fees among the A-, B-, and C-share classes. Some C-shares deduct a small charge for withdrawing money within the first year to discourage active fund trading. No-load funds, like all mutual funds, have management costs. They just don’t have sales charges, and their management fees tend to be the lowest of all mutual funds. For more information, review the mutual fund’s prospectus, or visit www.morningstar.com for a free mutual fund research tool. Miscellany: Helping Heroes and Eating Healthy HEROES TO HOMETOWNS: The American Legion and DoD have launched a transition program, “Heroes to Hometowns,” which sets up a support network and coordinates resources before a severely injured servicemember returns home. Compared to other beef products, corned beef tends to be low in fat but high in salt. However, for those not on low-sodium diets, corned beef is a healthy meat — especially when cooked with cabbage, carrots, and other vegetables. Rear Adm.
