DVD Navy SEALs Training DVD Set (Discovery Channel, 2003): The 83 men of Class 234 selected for Basic Underwater Demolition School endure a tough six months. They’ve been selected from more than 1,500 applicants, but only 32 of them actually will become U.S. Navy SEALs. BOOK Tax Deductions A to Z: Military and Reservists (Boxed Books Inc., 2006): Anne Skalka, CPA, with the help of Janice Beth Gregg, provides active duty servicemembers and reservists with a single source for finding money-saving tax deductions. The book supplants confusing technical jargon with plain English in an easy-to-follow, alphabetical format. DVD U.S. Rapid Deployment Force: 36 Hours (Varied Directions, 2004): To defend our interests around the world, the U.S. must have a fully equipped and supplied force that is trained and stationed in the U.S. but ready to go anywhere on short notice. This DVD captures scenes of a grueling exercise for a rapid-deployment team. P atrick Hartnett, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Rhode Island (URI), majors in civil engineering and German. As a high school honor student and four-sport varsity athlete, you had a lot of college options. Why did you choose URI? I looked at several schools, but ultimately the International Engineering Program at URI was very attractive to me. Where do you see yourself in four years? I’m in a ﬁveyear program that includes a semester studying in Germany. World economies have all become so globalized. My hope is this program will give me the international background I’ll need to ﬁnd a job. How has the MOAA scholarship helped you? If not for the scholarship, I would have had to ﬁnd a job to help pay for school. MOAA took away that worry and really allowed me to focus completely on doing my best in class, and my grades are better because of it. I’m grateful for MOAA’s kindness and willingness to invest in my future. I’ll do my best to excel in my ﬁeld. What do you do for fun? I’m a member of the Newman Club, a Catholic group on campus involved in community service. I play intramural soccer, basketball, and volleyball. — Rob Newell Time’s Running Out E nter your patriotic photo in MOAA’s 2007 Patriotic Photo Contest by the end of this month. All MOAA members and their spouses may submit a photo that must fall into one of four categories — camaraderie, military family, on duty, or vintage (for photos taken on or before Dec. 31, 1980). Each photo must be submitted with an ofﬁcial entry form. Attach a label to the back of each print specifying the category and including your name, address, and telephone number. Do not write directly on the photo. Photos will not be returned. Receipt of photos will not be acknowledged. Entries must be received no later than 4 p.m. Eastern time March 31.
