chapteractivities “Give Me 10!” Rides Again MOAA chapters welcomed more than 2,500 new members and earned more than $44,000 in prizes during the 2006 Give Me 10! campaign alone. While you’re there, take a moment to read some of the stories that describe successful techniques used by chapters to recruit at least 10 new members. The Give Me 10! program continues to gain momentum, thanks to the hard work of councils and chapters across the country. Thank you for all you do to keep MOAA strong. “When we’re done, we’ll have this history we can give out to all the schools and organizations to help educate the younger generation,” says Catriz. “It’s very important we preserve all this stuff, because once it’s gone, it’s gone.” Hawaii Chapter Attends Pearl Harbor Event H clubs and a “twinning program” with MOAA’s Southern Nevada Chapter in Las Vegas, which fosters camaraderie and fellowship among chapter members who live in different parts of the country. Col. Gordon Cho, USA-Ret., who serves as chapter secretary, chaired the 2005 “Give Me 10!” recruiting campaign. Thanks to his dedication and hard work, the Aloha Chapter earned quite a bit of money, which was used to pay the greens fees for four active duty servicemembers from the Army’s 411th Engineering Battalion at Fort Shafter to play in the 2006 Hawaii Army Museum Society Golf Tournament. Washington Chapter Launches Military History Project K 52 itsap County, Wash., is home to many veterans who have served their country proudly in wartime. Now, members of the Kitsap Chapter are working to preserve these veterans’ memories through a project they launched last year called “Military History: After-Action Lessons Learned from Kitsap County.” MILITARY OFFICER MARCH 2007 Chapter historian Col. Roger Meyer, USA-Ret., spearheads the project. To promote community support, Meyer and chapter Public Affairs Ofﬁcer Capt. Al Catriz, USNR-Ret., made an appearance on a public television show with local resident John D. Hawk, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions as an Army sergeant in World War II. The chapter will collect and archive veterans’ accounts, which can be used by museums, schools, and organizations. Some of this information also will be published in a forthcoming book. An advisory group consisting of Meyer, Hawk, and other Kitsap County military leaders oversees the project, and proceeds will beneﬁt scholarships for local students and support local museum archives. To date, six Kitsap museums have agreed to place the military history collection — which will contain tapes, photos, and personal accounts — in their archives. Meyer currently is compiling and editing area veterans’ stories. The collection also will include a history of the Navy’s presence in Kitsap County and information from other area military organizations. awaii Chapter President Col. John Harms, USMCRet.; his wife, Bobbie; and member Lt. Col. Lawrence Heyenga, USAR-Ret., represented MOAA and laid a wreath at the USS Arizona Memorial at a ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Heyenga was stationed at Schoﬁeld Barracks at the time of the attack.
