Read on to learn more about your fellow MOAA members. Cmdr. Doug Denneny, USN-Ret. (member since 2001): A 1984 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., Denneny was a TOPGUN instructor and commanded a squadron during combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a legislative fellow to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and a special assistant to the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Denneny retired from the Navy in 2006 and is running for U.S. Congress in Virginia’s 11th District. Brig. Gen. Edward B. Kitchens Jr., USA-Ret. (member since 1972): This Mississippi native’s 30-year military career included helping to activate the 3rd Ranger Battalion in 1943, spending more than a year as a POW in World War II, and serving in both Korea and Vietnam. After retirement from the military, he worked in the business sector. Now 90 years old, Kitchens continues to do pro bono work. Anne Patton (auxiliary life member since 1997): Patton has served for the past 33 months as a member of MOAA’s Auxiliary Member Advisory Committee. She participated in the first auxiliary member focus group in 2001 that led to the formation of the committee, which now reports to the chair of MOAA’s board of directors. A successful artist and longtime volunteer in her hometown of Encinitas, Calif., Patton serves on numerous boards and has held the position of planning commissioner for eight years. Lt. Col. Linwood P. Smith, USAF-Ret. (life member since 1976): After a full military career and a dozen years of civil service work, Smith has joined his son and daughter-in-law’s consulting firm in Pennsylvania. He also creates custom oil paintings and has crafted a slide presentation, “Musings of a P-51 Pilot in Europe in World War II,” presented to the Philadelphia Chapter of MOAA and other audiences.
