Military Officer - March 2008 - (Page 17) USNR, who attended the Medal of Honor ceremony in the Oval Office. —Capt. Bill Glass, USNR-Ret. via e-mail “This Month in History” [“Pages of History,” January 2008] states, “On Jan. 9, 1945, Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur freed the Philippine people.” As a 19-year-old sailor on a tin can that entered Leyte Gulf Oct. 17, 1944, it seems that a few other people were involved beside “Dugout Doug”! In fact, some even died in the process. —CWO4 W.F. Mansfield, USA-Ret. Braintree, Mass. A Retirement Resort Community EXCLUSIVELY FOR MILITARY OFFICERS NEW PHASE NOW W I N NE R GE AWA SA OPEN! RD Post-War Battle The date printed in [“In Review,” “Rapid Fire,” January 2008] for the Battle of Belleau Wood is 1919, when in fact the battle was in 1918. The armistice was signed Nov. 11, 1918, so fighting this battle after that would have been sort of ex post facto. —Elsa Isaacs Fayetteville, Ark. Editor’s note: Many readers wrote about this error; the editorial staff are chagrined we failed to correct it. “Your Dream Life is a Reality at AFVW” • Spacious homes, duplexes, and apartments - pets welcomed • Over 25 floor plans from 644 to 3,360 square feet • Gated entries, security guards and patrol units • On-campus skilled nursing, assisted living, and Alzheimer’s facilities • Housekeeping, home and landscaping maintenance • In-door pool and spa, exercise room, and wellness program • Computer lab, library, editing studio, art classes • Great food prepared by fine chefs • Adjacent 18-hole golf course, and more! Tactical Error I noticed a significant error in [“TaxTime Tactics”] in the February 2008 edition of Military Officer. On page 52, in the “Tax-Time Checklist” box, it is stated that the contribution limit for 2007 IRAs is $5,000 per person, plus an additional $1,000 if you turned 50 in 2007. That is the correct amount for 2008, but the 2007 limit is $4,000, plus the $1,000 “catch up,” for a total of $5,000 in 2007. —Lt. Col. J.P.
