Some herbs can be planted from seeds, either started in the house or directly outside. Others are better started from plants. However, if you don’t want to wait until summer, fresh herbs are available in most grocery stores year-round. Fresh herbs can be grown in a small kitchen planter or outdoors in a small plot. Most do best in good soil, with lots of sun and regular watering. In areas with a hard frost, many are annuals and require replanting each year. Other herbs are perennials and grow for many years, especially in warmer climates. Most herb plants grow fairly quickly, flower (to make seeds), and then die. To keep them growing throughout the summer, continue to cut off some of the top leaves and any flowers. Don’t worry — they will grow back. However, leave the flowers on at the end of the season so plants can reseed and return the following year.
