Many former military members who were stationed in the area return to retire — and the area recognizes that. The community supports seniors with an array of organizations and services, including MOAA chapters and Senior Solutions, a special program of the Better Business Bureau. The moderate housing costs and lack of state income tax also make it a popular choice for retirees. A commissary and exchange are available at NAS Corpus Christi. However, the medical clinic can serve only active duty folks, so retirees there rely on TRICARE. Diego, California’s second-largest city. Additionally, Naval Medical Center San Diego is the largest, most comprehensive military health care facility in the western U.S. Both inpatient and outpatient services are available. Appointments can be made online and are available to retirees and their dependents at a number of locations in the San Diego area.
