He cites many examples of why we are still as economically and politically as strong as ever. [But] as fate would have it, I am reading a book with an entirely opposite viewpoint — The Limits of Power (Metropolitan Books, 2008) by [retired Army Col.] Andrew Bacevich. He describes in compelling terms how the [U.S.] economy is in “remarkable disarray,” the government “transformed by an imperial presidency” resulting in a “democracy in form only,” and a “deep infatuation with military power.” I would like to believe Dowd, but, although he said in the lead-in to his article that he “ takes a look at both sides,” I saw little of the other side. —Col.
