My wife, an Army veteran of the Korean War, served two years as a physical therapist before being honorably discharged. A few years ago, she attempted to register with the local VA hospital in Dayton, Ohio. When she honestly completed the required information form, she was told she was not eligible because her income level was too high. She then asked whether the VA verified income levels, and she was told they did not. It is called “beating the system,” and many financially well-off veterans take great pride in doing so. But our problems with the VA are inconsequential when compared to those of our “wounded warriors” from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most [servicemembers] know that as do some of the general public. MOAA is doing what it can and all improvements are noteworthy. But so much more needs to be done. It is often said that the government must prioritize its spending. “What is a higher priority than the care of these soldiers, airmen, sailors, and coastguardsmen?” I ask. It is my belief that their care is priority No. 1. Let us hope that we all will work as hard toward change in the care of veterans as MOAA [does], and let’s hope we will see the sustained improvement in 2009 promised by President Obama. —Lt. Col.
