Thanks to a strong response, the chapter plans to award four more $1,000 scholarships this year. after local philanthropist Sarah Roper bequest 300 acres of land to the chapter following her death to establish a veterans cemetery. According to chapter President Col. Victoria Revilla, USA-Ret., lack of interest in a veterans cemetery led chapter leaders to contact Roper’s family to see if they could sell part of the land and use the proceeds to establish an endowed scholarship fund to assist veterans’ children. The family agreed, and the Roper Memorial Scholarship Fund was formed. Since its inception in 1998, members have presented 95 scholarships totaling $109,500 to children and grandchildren of former servicemembers who attend high school in the St. Petersburg, Va., area. The Scholarship Fund of MOAA. Members helped contribute the $25,000 needed to establish the scholarship, which honors the late wife of longtime chapter member Col. Henry Ince, USARRet. Members also established a memorial scholarship to honor Ince at Central Florida College in Ocala. Each year, the chapter awards scholarships to area high school students attending a service academy or entering a college ROTC program. In 2008, the chapter awarded six $1,000 scholarships to area students. For two years now, the chapter also has awarded scholarships to deployed servicemembers’ young children so they could attend summer camp. According to Capt. Tyke Fury, USN-Ret., the chapter plans to send 11 children to Camp Kiwanis this summer. “This endeavor has truly demonstrated our genuine appreciation and continued support for those military families involved in the ongoing [Middle] East conflicts,” says Fury. Supporting others When members of the Cape Fear (N.C.) Chapter established their scholarship program in 1996, they focused on supporting collegebound students who participate in one of the Junior ROTC (JROTC) units the chapter supports. “In 2004, we decided to do more, and we began awarding scholarships to students who were beginning their senior year in an ROTC program,” says chapter President Lt. Col. Robert Garman, USA-Ret. Members host an annual golf tournament to fund the program. In 2008, the tournament netted $7,000, enabling the chapter to present two $1,500 ROTC scholarships and four $1,000 JROTC scholarships. The chapter’s Ladies Club also donated $2,000 for the effort in 2009. The Willow Grove (Pa.) Chapter uses its scholarship fund to support active duty servicemembers. In 2008, the chapter awarded six $500 college scholarships to enlisted personnel stationed at Joint Reserve NAS Willow Grove. “Our scholarship program used to be larger,” says chapter President and Scholarship Chair Lt. Col. David Manuel, USMC-Ret. “This year, we decided to show our support by contributing part of the money to four area family readiness groups [that assist deployed troops’ families].” Funding at all levels Members of the Kingdom of the Sun (Fla.) Chapter not only have their own scholarship program, but they also established the Vivian Ince Designated Scholarship through Give Me 10! Quarterly Award Winners Announced THE 2008 GIVE ME 10! CAMPAIGN was a rousing success, with 3,871 new members being recruited for national MOAA. Each quarterly award winner will receive an incentive check for $250. The winners are West: Colorado Council of Chapters, 54 new members; Midwest: Louisiana Council of Chapters, 44 new members; Southeast: Georgia MOAA, 19 new members; and Northeast: Pennsylvania Council of Chapters, 14 new members. Independent chapters (not served by a state council): Northeast: Southern Maine Chapter, 4 new members; West: Sierra Nevada Chapter, 2 new members; Midwest: Red River Valley (N.D.)
