Military installations in the area employ the largest part of the work force — nearly 50,000 people — and that number is expected to increase. Fort Carson, Peterson AFB (PAFB), and the U.S. Air Force Academy offer military support for retirees. There are three commissaries and exchanges in a 15-mile radius, and PAFB has the newest and largest commissary. Various bases have special services such as discount ski tickets and rental sporting equipment from skis to campers. Colorado Springs, Colo., was voted the country’s best place to live by Money Magazine in 2006. Medical care for retirees is available at both the U.S. Air Force Academy and Fort Carson. A large active duty population will be transferring to Fort Carson from Fort Hood, Texas, in the next few years, but major construction projects are planned and medical care still should be available. PAFB has a small clinic for active duty and their dependents only. Housing in the region ranges from age-restricted apartments and singlefamily-home communities to life care developments. Housing costs are average compared nationwide. There is a commercial airport in Colorado Springs.
